When buying new parts for your car its important to know exactly what it is your looking for. There are so many different parts in new cars today that it may be you will need to take your car to a professional garage to determine the problem and then you know which part it is you definitely need for your car.
You will also need to know whether you will have to be able to determine if you will be able to use a used part or if you will need a new piece altogether there are even new parts available for vintage and classic cars if you are building your own or have an existing car that needs new parts to work correctly. Some of these new parts you can get for vintage cars are;
- Braking systems
- Fuel systems
- Wheels and trims
- Windscreens
- Upholstery
If building your own vintage car it is important to be aware of how all the important parts of the vehicle are fitted correctly, so be entirely confident with how to carry out any of your motor work before proceeding with it. Here are some simple steps on how to install a steering wheel into a vintage car;
- To remove the existing steering-wheel, the centre nut must be unscrewed and removed. Use the appropriate socket wrench to loosen the centre nut, you should be able to find this out from the manual for the car you are building, and remove it.
- Loosen and remove the three shoulder bolts that are around the centre area of the wheel.
- With the centre nut and shoulder-bolts removed, the old wheel rim can be removed now.
- The part that actually holds the steering wheel onto the steering column is the steering wheel hub. That part must be removed as well before installing the replacement steering wheel. To remove the centre hub, a specialized steering wheel hub puller is the best tool to use. Install the puller by feeding the three threaded studs into the shoulder bolt holes. Tighten each of the studs down to the same length and pressure using the appropriate wrench, again you could see this in the manual.
- Once the studs are in place, tighten down the centre stud to pull the hub free from the steering column, and lift the hub off. Note the turn signal cancellation studs visible on the underside of the hub. These must be present on the replacement as well for it to be correct.
- The new steering wheel is assembled around the new hub before the assembly is put in place.
- Place the new collar on top of the hub, and then place the new steering wheel so that it rests on the collar.
Install the threaded rivets through the steering wheel into the hub, and tighten them down. Once the hub and wheel assembly is secure, place the assembly onto the column. The new wheel assembly should slip easily onto the steering column. - Place the centre hub nut washer and centre nut onto the threaded stud at the centre of the column, and tighten the nut down to the appropriate torque pressure, see your car manuals. The usual torque is around 80 pounds but always be sure to check.
- To assemble the horn push-button, install the horn-pickup and contact plate at the centre of the steering column, and secure the assembly with the screws provided.
So if building or repairing your vintage vehicle be sure to know the full procedure thoroughly or alternatively take it to a professional so then at least you will have the piece of mind the job was done correctly.
