Knowing what parts you can reuse from a motorcycle makes it a lot cheaper for you when a problem arises. There are certain parts that may just need repairing and are there fore salvageable although there are some parts that would need replacing with a new part. Here are some parts you can save from your motorcycle:
- Chain
- Brakes
- Gears (if the problem doesn’t involve opening the gearbox casing)
Parts that are completely un-saveable and would need replacing if there was a fault would be:
- Clutch
- Wheel rims
- Gears (if it is needed to have the casing opened)
The easiest part to maintain on your motorcycle and there fore is salvageable is your chain caring for it properly also makes the chain last a lot longer, so here are some tips on how to maintain your chain:
- First you would remove the chain from the bike and soak in kerosene(Gasoline would achieve the same result but it would cause a fire hazard).
- If there is any road grime and slight rust causing a problem, scrub lightly with a metal or hard bristle brush.
- Hang the chain over the container of kerosene and let it drip dry.
Using your hand go down the chain testing the rollers and flexibility between each link. If you find links that will not flex freely even after applying some force to them, the chain will unfortunately need replacing. - Place the chain down flat on the floor and measure out 1 foot from one end of the chain. Grab the chain at each end of this foot length and push the chain links together. Now pull the chain outward again and note any change in its length. It is recommended that the movement in length be no more than 1/4 inch. Check the rest of the chain in 1 foot length measurements in the same way. If the slack is more than 1/4 inch for any foot, the chain should be replaced.
- Re-lube the chain.
- You can re-lube the chain by using one of the aerosol lubes, however, if your chain is of the O-type then you will need to make sure it is compatible.
- A second way to lube your chain is by purchasing a can of solid lube. This form is more effective and will last for a longer period of time. The lube has to be heated the chain dipped in and then hung up to drain excess and harden.
- You will then replace your chain onto your motorcycle using the manual specifications for slack.
- The master link open end spring clip must face away from the direction of rotation.
There are plenty more things you can do on a fairly regular basis to help save different parts of your motorcycle, you can even now take motorcycle care courses in some areas.
